Blogging due 27.1.2017

As part of our Geography unit, we are going to be finding out whereabouts in the world different products are grown and produced. When you eat a banana or a piece of chocolate, have you ever wondered where it was grown and what kind of journey it has been on in order to get to our homes?

Part One:

Your task is to find out in which countries (and their continent) could the following products have been grown:

-coffee
-tea
-bananas
-sugar
-cotton
-chocolate (cocoa beans)

Part Two:

What can you find out about fair trade? Use your research skills to find out about fair trade and write a paragraph about it. You may find this website helpful: http://www.funkidslive.com/learn/environment/f-is-for-fairtrade/ ALWAYS ASK A PARENT'S PERMISSION BEFORE USING THE INTERNET.

  1. Coffee growing was an Olympic event, it'd be a marathon not a sprint. And not just because Africa totally dominates. Being a coffee superpower requires years of economic, infrastructural, and government investment. Plus a been-friendly terrior, farmers dedicated to quality control, and a trust in industry buyers to bring the beans to the masses.

Fair trade is a way of buying and selling products that allows the farmers to be paid a fair price for their produce and have better working conditions.
Trade is "unfair" when farmers receive very low income and have poor conditions while the companies selling their products make lots of money for them.
The Fairtrade Mark was introduced in 1994. Its symbol is made up of sky that symbolises optimism, an arm raised in the air that symbolises empowerment and green colour to symbolise growth.

A fair trade is an incredibly important. It’s all about giving people what they need and getting things that you need.
Only a tiny bit of the money you pay for something goes to the person who actually made it. This happens a lot when we import things from poorer countries.
Even with the tiniest amount of things you can make a fair trade with someone.

    Part 2 : Information about fair-trade

Fairtrade is a good idea to let farmers get how much money they need. It is not fair if the shopkeepers get most of the money because the farmer has worked really hard. It helps them send their children to schools. It also helps them get electricity and running water in their houses.

  13. Coffee
Brazil is the largest producer of coffee and the second largest coffee-consuming nation. Its coffee sector employs over five million people and contributes 40% of the world’s total coffee supply. Vietnam is the second largest producer of coffee in the world, accounting for 16% of global production. It is the main producer of Robustas.
Colombia is the second-largest supplier of Arabica coffee after Brazil. Ethiopia is the largest coffee producer in Africa.

    Tea
Records show tea originated in China as long as three thousand years ago! It was first used as a medicine, but grew in popularity as explorers and merchants began their travels. Throughout the centuries tea use became more and more far-reaching, spreading across Asia and to Japan, India and Thailand in particular and eventually made its way to Europe and Africa in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

    Banana
Bananas are produced in 135 countries and territories across the tropics and subtropics. Bananas are grown in countries of the tropics - Africa, Latin America, Caribbean, Pacific etc. Most bananas sold on the British market are exported from Latin America, and increasingly West Africa. India is the largest producer of bananas (11 million tonnes) and Uganda is the largest producer of plantains (9 million tonnes). Most of the bananas you buy are grown within 20 degrees on either side of the equator.

    Sugar
Sugar is a worldwide commodity and countries on six of the seven continents produce sugar. The countries that produce the most sugar are Brazil, India, China, Thailand, The United States and Mexico. Sugar comes from sugarcane, which is perennial grass that grows in tropical or temperate climates around the world.

    Cotton
Leading cotton-growing countries are Brazil, Pakistan and Turkey. In this country, the major cotton-producing states are: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, Florida, Kansas and Virginia.

    Chocolate
The cocoa tree is a native of the Amazon basin and other tropical areas of South and Central America, where wild varieties still grow in the forests, but the cocoa growing area has extended to the Caribbean and beyond. Most of the world's cocoa is grown in a narrow belt 10 degrees either side of the Equator because cocoa trees grow well in humid tropical climates with regular rains and a short dry season. Many countries now grow cocoa but the main producers are
    • West Africa - Ghana which grows some of the best quality cocoa in the world, Nigeria and Cote D'Ivoire
    • South America - Brazil and Ecuador
    • Asia - Malaysia and Indonesia, where cocoa is a relatively new crop, are becoming increasingly important growing areas.
